Post by simpleeb on Aug 20, 2017 3:39:04 GMTI know this has been brought up before but out of curiosity do you tip the gas attendant? I am a native Oregonian (47 years) and I have never tipped or have been guilted to tip until today. Show
I stopped at my neighborhood gas station (going there for over 10 years) and was asked if I wanted my windshield washed (they are a full servicestation). After I said yes (I don't usually but today I was driving a few hours and thought it might not be a bad idea) he starts to wash my window and begins to tell me that he has worked like 8 days in a row and the only thing keeping him going is the extra money and tips. I felt that he was hinting that I should be tipping him. I have no problems about tipping but for gas attendants I have always felt it wasn't necessary. Needless to say I didn't tip him. So with that said - do you tipat gas stations? I am still feeling slightly guilty but as I mentioned I have been going there for a long time, have had my window washed before, and no request for a tip.

For anything other than just pumping gas (checking the oil, washing windows, adding air to the tires) he tipped a minimal amount. This was a service he appreciated because he had a bad hip which made it painful for him to get in and out of thecar. |
Post by 950nancy on Aug 20, 2017 3:57:59 GMTI can't remember ever having someone pump my gas for me. Is the price of gas adjusted to pay for the person's wages? If so, I might tip a couple of bucks for the convenience. I hate getting gas.
Post by smokeynspike on Aug 20, 2017 4:14:15 GMTConsidering that it is against the law to pump your own gas, no, I have never tipped when we traveled to Oregon growing up from Washington State, nor any of the times that I have visited as an adult. I would not have tipped for washing my window either, because if they let you get out of your car at the gas station, I would be more thanhappy to do it myself! Melissa

At times I would actually prefer to pump my own since I have to sit and wait for the attendant. And price wise we are usually close to what gas costs in WA where there is self service. I think our gas is typically on the higher end of the national average but I think that is tied more to the gas tax.

Will someone let me know when America is great again? Thanks! |
Post by tracylynn on Aug 20, 2017 4:46:05 GMTBecause by law you can't pump your own gas in Oregon, no, I wouldn't even consider tipping.

Post by Katiepotatie on Aug 20, 2017 6:26:36 GMTOregonian piping up...never have tipped. Never even crossed my mind. Never been guilted into it with a window washing. Also, you can get out of your car. At least at the places I go. Sometimes I get out to empty trash, buy a quick soda, change drivers , etc. Maybe each place is different. Maybe I'm an outlaw!!...
Post by georgiapea on Aug 20, 2017 15:46:18 GMTNo. Never. As one of the few states with attendants they may have encountered confused people who have tipped them and now feel it's their due.

Pretty sure my DH gave the attendant a tip but we may have been targeted for that because of our license plate. |

Posts: 12,955 | Post by peasapie on Aug 20, 2017 16:45:43 GMTI thought we in NJ were the only ones who had attendants who pumped the gas. They almost never wash the windows anymore, though, and the one time someone did that I gave him a dollar. I don't think it's a have-to, though. |
Post by melanell on Aug 21, 2017 3:59:56 GMTI've never driven in OR, but I've driven in NJ plenty, and I've never tipped when I get gas there. It's not like I could pump the gas but want them to do it for the convenience---I don't have the option of pumping my own.
Post by breetheflea on Aug 21, 2017 4:06:57 GMTIt's actually kind of annoying when you are used to pumping your own gas, and then you can't. Washington: drive up to open pump, pay, pump your gas, leave. Oregon wait in line for an open pump, wait for someone to come over ask what you want and take your card, watch them push the button you could push yourself and stick thenozzle in, wait for the tank to fill, wait for the person to come back from 3 rows over so they can take the nozzle out of the car, wait for them to push the button for your receipt... I prefer no lines and pumping my own gas... and I have never tipped.

Post by Chasing Dirt on Aug 21, 2017 12:29:33 GMTDoes the law extend to washing your own windshield? I could've sworn we've washed our own in Oregon and I'm also pretty sure they told us once that they just have to get the pump started & take care of the money but we were allowed to replace it and carry on. I do know you can get out of your car-- that was funny.

The attendants might look at you a bit concerning if you get out as soon as you pull up because they think you may try to pump your own gas. And most places don't offer to wash your window anymore- this one happens to still offer. And I ended upbringing the whole tipping/windshield thing up to my husband and he said he would have tipped since it was a service outside of pumping gas. I was a bit shocked since he is also long time Oregonian.
Post by luckyexwife on Aug 22, 2017 2:26:38 GMTI was just in Oregon last week on vacation, and we were told by several people not to tip (our friends that live there, hotel employees, etc)

Wow, I never knew there were states like that! That would be lovely in rain/snow/ice/115 degrees/etc. Wow... lol |

Is one supposed to tip the attendant at full-service gas stations? Tipping is customary only if there are both full-serve and self-serve options at the station and the fuel is priced the same at both. These conditions aren't frequently met, so no tipping required.
