Ingredients

  • 1 cup yellow cornmeal (not stoneground) shopping list
  • 1 cup flour shopping list
  • 3/4 tsp salt shopping list
  • 4 tsp baking powder shopping list
  • 1/4 cup sugar shopping list
  • 2 eggs, beaten shopping list
  • 1/2 - 1 cup milk shopping list
  • 1/4 cup oil shopping list
  • oil for deep frying shopping list
  • 10 ice cream sticks shopping list
  • 10 hot dogs shopping list

How to make it

  • Push ice cream stick in each hot dog, set aside
  • mix all ingredients (yes 1/4 cup oil goes in batter)
  • mix well until no lumps.
  • Start with 1/2 cup milk and add as necessary until batter is similar to pancake.
  • Drop in 360 - 370 degree oil and fry until golden.
  • Remove with tongs and drain on paper bag or paper towls.
  • Enjoy!
  • Note: You can purchase the sticks in the craft section of Wal-Mart and craft stores. I used a bread loaf pan for the oil, so it wouldn't take as much. Don't overfill, fill only halfway. Fry two at a time. They cook quick.

My wife and I had a fair food dinner night. Your corn dogs and french-fry potato salad. Your corn dogs came out perfect! You know it is good when my wife says, "OK, save that recipe. You can do that one again!"

Thanks. This recipe is a keeper!

These were perfect! I even used sprouted whole wheat flour and organic Red Mill masa, olive oil in the batter, evaporated cane juice sugar, pastured eggs, used a bit more milk due to the ww flour has the bran and it soaks up more as it sits. I halved the dogs (yes, real beef, uncured) and made minis to use less oil. I used safflower oil to fry in, it's a somewhat safe oil. Despite making these as healthy as possible, they really did taste like real corn dogs from the fair. I made the left over batter into doughnut hole size fritters and coated em with cinnamon sugar..amazing too!

I haven't made these yet but plan on doing it soon. but i have a question where can I purchase a corn dog fryer? I don't want them to be flat on one side like i have experienced before.

When you use the bread pan, do you just put it directly on the stove top and use a thermometer to keep track of the temperature? I can't wait to try these!!

I had to make these... They were very very good. The only thing I will change is, the hot dogs I had were 4-1. That means quarter pounders... WAY TO BIG. Hubby did not think so, neither did Grandson... but I did. Next dogs I get will be the 5-1. Great post...

Now you've found my weakness - I have to agree with linebb...corn dogs are the reason for going to fairs - but no one makes them with a homemade dipping batter anymore. This will be a "must try". The picture alone sold me...

  • OMG... I love these things... they are one of the reasons I go to the stock shows and fairs.. that and funnel cakes... THANK YOU!
Question, what is the diffrence between the corn meals? I have seen several times that statement.
